wine, in the Lord’s supper, are said to be the body and blood of Christ; to partake of these emblems, is said to secure union with Christ and a participation of the merits of his death.* These and similar passages must be understood either with or without limitation. If they are to be limited, the limitation must not be arbitrarily imposed, but supplied by the Scriptures themselves. We have no right to say that the sacraments confer these benefits in every case in which no moral impediment is interposed,
